Introductory Retreat for Early Stage Doctoral Researchers

Under the motto "Erfolgreich in die Promotion", an introductory retreat for Early Creer Researchers (ECR) is held twice a year. The retreat offers early-stage doctoral researchers the opportunity to get off to a good start in their doctoral studies. In numerous workshops and lectures, you will receive helpful information, important tools for passing the doctorate, and plenty of space for networking with like-minded people.

Target group: The retreat is aimed at doctoral students of all disciplines who are in the first six months of their doctorate.
Description: It is a long way from the decision to do a doctorate to the handing over of the doctoral certificate. The exchange and networking with like-minded people is very valuable for the start of a PhD. The aim of this kick-off event is to make it easier for doctoral candidates to start their doctoral studies and to introduce them to contact persons at the four institutions as well as to provide them with helpful information about the content of their doctoral studies. Accompanied by trainers, a selection of important tools will be tested in small exercises and opportunities will be shown to deepen these across institutions in further follow-up workshops. The event will be rounded off by short presentations, joint activity breaks and a networking evening.
Participation requirements & costs: Only doctoral students who are working on their doctorate at a member university of the Berlin University Alliance (Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin) can participate. Participation is free of charge.

Within the framework of the Berlin University Alliance, Graduate Studies Support aims to improve the conditions for young academics at Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin and Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin during the doctoral phase.
Review
The last ECR Retreats took place in May and November 2021, each as English- and German-language online events. All events were filled with stimulating and supportive seminars, workshops and consulting sessions led by our selected team of highly qualified and dedicated trainers, whom we sincerely thank! Among the various topics covered, some of the most popular were: time management and creative writing methods.
The retreats have proven to be an excellent and valuable opportunity for the participating junior scholars acquire new knowledge and skills that will be very helpful to them in their academic and scientific journey. Even though it was an online event, it was a place where they could network with like-minded people to find support, get feedback on their ideas, and find new inspiration to move forward.
