Scientific Writing

Eine junge Frau schaut mit zwei jungen Männern auf ein Notebook.

For PhD students

Main focus of the “Writing” area at the Berlin University Alliance is a writing week that supports doctoral candidates in structuring the writing process, helps counter writer’s block, and promotes their publication skills. This is supplemented by writing workshops that can focus on specific skills, such as freelance writing or the conceptualization of scientific papers. “Writing” is designed to teach the elementary scientific techniques that are critical to one’s personal future and the future of science. Writing and publishing are prone to crises that can lead to scientific misconduct. The program aims to counteract this by teaching confidence in scientific writing, thus paving the way for doctoral students through the dissertation.

Good Science

For PhD students

At the heart of the “Good Science” area at the Berlin University Alliance lies a joint retreat for new doctoral students with information and the teaching of techniques for a successful start to the PhD, as well as a conference on good research and research integrity, where the rules and principles of good scientific practice are presented and questions of ethical responsibility and the importance of reproducibility of research results are discussed. The offering will be complemented by workshops and one-on-one counseling sessions that will provide practical skills in many areas.

The offering is designed to teach the three thematic areas of focus:

  1. The integrity of research according to rules and principles of good scientific practice,
  2. the ethical responsibility of science and researchers and research,
  3. that leads to reproducible, valid and generalizable results.

Mental Health

Drei Frauen und zwei Männer sitzen in einem Kreis zusammen.

For PhD students

The focus of the “Health” area at Berlin University Alliance is a blended learning event on mental health/resilience, which deals with strategies for strengthening (mental) stamina and resilience in crisis situations. The central event is supplemented in a decentralized manner with individual discussions and workshops on mental health topics, such as how to deal well in supervisory relationships or burn outs. The Berlin University Alliance is thus responding to the increase in discourse on mental health in the academic field. The aim of this module, which is aimed at all doctoral candidates of the alliance partners across all universities, is prevention and thus the essential improvement of the conditions of doctoral candidates.

Career Development

Center of the “Career Development” area at Berlin University Alliance is a career day that offers insights into career paths within and outside of universities and encourages reflection on one’s own path after earning a PhD. This core event is supported by various peer mentoring opportunities as well as workshops on topics such as event management. The Berlin University Alliance has made it its goal to support the transition of doctoral students into the working world. All universities in the alliance offer a wide range of programs to sensitize doctoral students to this topic at an early stage in order to pave the way for young academics to enter the working world.
